Businesswoman Melinda Gates, co-chair of the world’s largest philanthropy — the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation — closed the 2019 Spring Leadership Lecture Series in conversation with actress/singer Mandy Moore at Dominican University of California May 6.
The event in Angelico Concert Hall had been sold out since March.
Gates, a global advocate for women and girls, discussed her heroes and her awakening to the link between women’s empowerment and the health of societies in her book The Moment of Lift. She was joined on stage by Moore, a Golden Globe nominated actress from NBC’s award-winning This Is Us.
Gates joined New York Times columnist and political commentator David Brooks, two-time Olympic gold medalist and FIFA World Cup soccer star Abby Wambach, former Barack Obama senior advisor Valerie Jarrett, and Jason Rezaian, former Tehran bureau chief for the Washington Post, in appearing at Dominican this spring. Brooks spoke to a capacity crowd on May 2. Rezaian, Jarrett, and Wambach spoke at Dominican on January 28, April 11, and April 17 respectively.
The speaker series, a cooperative effort between Dominican’s Institute for Leadership Studies and Book Passage, features some of the country’s leading figures from the worlds of business, politics, entertainment, academia, and literature. The series has entertained and educated thousands of Marin County and San Francisco Bay Area residents for the past 15 years.
All lectures are held in Dominican’s Angelico Concert Hall. Doors open one hour prior to the programs. Free parking is available in the Conlan Center parking lot at the intersection of Acacia and Grand Avenues.
